Burnishing and Deep Rolling

Defined Surfaces and Extended Tool Life – Right on the Machine

Roller burnishing and deep rolling improve metal surfaces through cold forming, reducing roughness and enhancing load-bearing capacity, sealing, and sliding properties. Deep rolling also introduces compressive residual stresses to increase fatigue strength in highly stressed components.

Our solutions integrate directly into turning and milling centers, enabling complete machining in a single setup for efficient, reliable, and repeatable results. Whether mechanical or hydrostatic, for internal, external, or freeform surfaces, we offer the right technology to achieve high-quality surface finishes without additional grinding or polishing.

Roller Burnishing

Roller burnishing significantly improves surface smoothness, delivering the desired surface properties, such as better sliding characteristics and increased load-bearing capacity. It also improves wear resistance and extends component service life.

Operating Principle

  • Mechanical
Single- or multi-roller tools offering easy adjustment, high precision, and reliable operation.
  • Hydrostatic
Smooths and hard-burnishes complex contours and freeform surfaces in all metallic materials up to 65 HRC.

Applications

  • Internal
    • Cylindrical bores from 3.7 mm in diameter
    • Tapered bores
    • Any rotationally symmetrical internal contours
    • Spherical surfaces
    • Internal fillets and grooves
  • External
    • Cylindrical surfaces from 0.5 mm shaft diameter
    • External tapers
    • Any rotationally symmetrical external contours
    • Spherical and freeform surfaces
    • Ball machining
    • External fillets and undercuts

Deep Rolling

Deep rolling significantly increases component service life and fatigue strength. This forming process and the resulting work hardening of the near-surface layer improve the distribution of compressive residual stresses in highly stressed components, enhancing their fatigue resistance.

Cylinder Tube Machining (Peeling and Roller Burnishing)

Compared to honed cylinder tubes, roller-burnished cylinder surfaces offer significantly better sliding and sealing properties.

ECOROLL offers peeling tools for pre-machining and corresponding roller burnishing tools for finish machining. These tools are primarily designed for use on cylinder tube machining and deep-hole drilling machines, for example in a combined peeling and roller burnishing process. Short cylinder tubes can also be machined on turning machines.
