URMA Expands Machine Tool Portfolio with High-Precision EDM Technology from Seibu

Launch of Seibu Electric & Machinery Wire EDM Machines in Switzerland and Liechtenstein

Article: URMA AG

With the addition of Seibu, URMA AG is expanding its machine portfolio to include a Japanese manufacturer with decades of experience in electrical discharge machining (EDM). In 1972, Seibu built the world’s first CNC-controlled wire EDM machine and has continuously advanced its EDM technology for more than 50 years.

The focus is on applications where tight dimensional accuracy, repeatable surface finishes, and stable processes are critical. These include precision tooling and mold making, components for the watch and medical industries, as well as other demanding applications and complex contours.

Precision Built into the Design

A key feature of Seibu machines is their cross-table design. The column remains stationary while the work tank moves, so the position of the upper and lower wire guides does not change. The highly rigid structure and low center of gravity help maintain stable accuracy across the entire work envelope.

The machines also incorporate the traditional Japanese technique of kisage. Guide elements and mating surfaces are hand-scraped to produce highly precise planes and maintain long-term geometric stability. Seibu combines this traditional manufacturing expertise with modern CNC, generator, and automation technology.

Seibu Wire EDM Benefits at a Glance

High Precision for Demanding Applications
EDM technology enables complex geometries and hard materials to be machined with high dimensional and form accuracy. It is particularly well suited to precision tools, medical technology, micromechanics, and other demanding applications.

Fine-Wire Technology for Intricate Geometries
The combination of precise machine kinematics and fine-wire technology enables small radii, fine contours, and complex geometries. Seibu’s ultra-precision models support wire diameters starting at 0.05 mm.

Process Conditions Tailored with Water-Based Dielectric
Water as the dielectric allows the technology to be tailored to the material, geometry, and requirements for precision and surface quality.

Stable Results During Long Machining Cycles
The rigid machine structure, cross-table design, and stable wire guidance help maintain consistent machining quality over extended run times. For users, this means repeatable results and predictable production processes.

Cost-Effective Process Control
Stable machining conditions and reliable wire feeding reduce unplanned intervention and support the efficient use of consumables. This helps lower cost per part, particularly for recurring and automated machining tasks.

Less Scrap and Rework
High repeatability and stable processes help prevent quality deviations at an early stage. This reduces scrap, manual corrections, and rework – a key advantage for high-value components and tight tolerances.

Precision Technology with Local Support

With the addition of Seibu, URMA AG is expanding its precision manufacturing portfolio with a technology designed for applications where conventional machining processes reach their limits due to complex geometries, very hard materials, or extremely tight tolerances. At the same time, customers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein gain a local partner for consulting, applications support, training, and service.

See Seibu Live at the URMA Experience Day

At the URMA Experience Day in Mägenwil on October 21, URMA AG will present Seibu technology in Switzerland for the first time. Attendees will be able to experience the machines and their functions in operation and discuss specific applications with URMA’s EDM specialists.
