In modern CNC machining, it is not just the feed rate and speed that are important – how the milling cutter engages with the material and leaves it again is also crucial. One strategy that is particularly impressive in terms of tool life and machining quality is the so-called 'Thick to Thin' strategy.
'Thick to Thin' describes a milling strategy in which the chip cross-section decreases continuously from entry to exit. The milling cutter starts with full engagement (thick chip) and reduces the chip volume to a minimum on exit (thin chip).
The aim: Efficient removal without unnecessarily stressing the tool.
